Granted, Minecraft: Bedrock Edition is a different story. Microsoft isn't licensing out any code for Minecraft: Java Edition. I'm saying that Java Edition is built on open source libraries (LWJGL, Netty, 3d Sound System, JOrbis, and Unifont), not that the game is open-source. But Yggdrasil really isn't all that complex in the grand scheme of things. Microsoft's authentication system is pretty complicated, yes. They could have invested in upgrading the security of Mojang accounts, but they probably deemed it would be more affordable to just use the existing Microsoft account system as it otherwise would have been expensive, unnecessary, and redundant. Really, this is likely more about Microsoft wanting to force people into their ecosystem than anything else. Comparing legacy MC/Mojang to Microsoft accounts by comparison is like comparing apples to oranges. That's the only difference, otherwise they're literally the same thing. That's because the accounts before Mojang accounts (legacy Minecraft accounts) were effectively the same thing but instead of using emails, you'd sign in with usernames. Java Edition contains some open source libraries, but the entire thing isn't comprised of open source code.īesides, for migrations they don't have to keep any compatibility with the old system, they could completely shut down their old servers and ingest all of the database data into a new system if they wanted to.Īlso keep in mind that Mojang kept migrations from their original system going from 2012-2021. Unless I'm mistaken, is built entirely using open-source libraries. :)Īuthentication systems really aren't all that complicated. If you have any additional questions, let me know in the comments and I'll do my best to answer what I know. EDIT: As of September 2023, Mojang has backtracked on this and mentioned in their post-migration FAQ that usernames will be freed up "at a later date". Usernames of old accounts will not be freed up when deleted/refunded. All remaining unmigrated accounts will be deleted in March 2025. Q: What will happen to unmigrated Legacy Minecraft/Mojang accounts after the deadline? Will they be deleted?Ī: According to support, unmigrated accounts can be either deleted or refunded if not migrated by September. Support is infamous for taking a VERY long time to respond to tickets, so it's vital that you do this as soon as possible, before it's impossible for support to help you. How do I regain access so I can migrate?Ī: Contact Minecraft Support as soon as you possibly can. Q: I don't have access to my Legacy Minecraft/Mojang account. Mojang will not provide support for migration after September 5. What should I do?Ī: Migrate immediately or you risk losing access to Minecraft forever. Q: I haven't migrated to a Microsoft account yet. Here is a FAQ explaining how this will affect you: Yesterday, Mojang announced that they will be ending the ability for players to migrate their Legacy Minecraft and Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts beginning September 19, 2023, at 11:00 am EST/17:00 pm CEST with support being unable to help players with migration starting September 5, 2023.
